OK, SO BOOM!

Maggie arrived in Needham and thought she had luck with a man named Scotty. She has an intimate moment with him, demonstrating her inexperience with the horizontal tango. Furthermore, her encounter with Scotty shames her and drives her to retreat home early.

Her experience at the Needham bar leads Maggie back to square one, and she dares not return there, for she is afraid of running into Scotty again. She voices this to Hubert, and he suggests that she venture to a Mobile bar where men outnumber the women five to one.

Sticking with the plan, Maggie makes her way to Mobile, and just her luck, she meets a man named Randolph Webb. She snags him with a story under her bar-hopping alias, Louise. As Louise, Maggie presents herself as a woman driven to move back in with her parents because her husband recently broke up with her. Her purpose at the bar is to escape loneliness from the breakup and to meet men outside of town because her parents are very religious.

Randolph eats this story up and quickly reveals that his spouse left him too. Somewhere in their conversation, he also mentions that he has seven children. Maggie hangs onto this fact and jumps at the opportunity to spend time with Randolph, outside the Saloon, in the privacy of his home.

To her surprise, Randolph’s home is clean and organized. Given his current relationship status, she assumed differently. As if he wasn’t a good catch already, she’s enjoying Randolph’s company more than expected. Progressing from the couch to the bedroom, Maggie sleeps with Randolph more than once and may have enjoyed it. This thought scares Maggie and tests her fixed idea that sex cannot be enjoyable.

Keeping these feelings in mind, she puts all her eggs in one basket and continues to visit Randolph regularly, so much so that the neighbors are talking. Word has gotten back to Maggie’s parents. During her visit, they attempt to remind her that she is someone’s wife and should carry herself as such. Maggie appeases them, only after reminding them that she’s grown and will do as she pleases.

After visiting her parents, Maggie immediately visits Randolph, increasing her chances of conceiving. She’s hopeful that it will happen soon, as each visit with Randolph is becoming riskier. Randolph is becoming clingier, and his expectation of spending more time with Maggie has her pressed.

Count me in too, because I’m tired of Randolph too. He’s sweet, but he doesn’t understand space.

Things That Make Me Go Hmm

• I’m curious about why the enjoyment of sex sparks fear in Maggie. I wonder if she’s afraid for herself or her marriage.

• Maggie’s parents had a point, but their delivery could have been better.

• Randolph’s clinginess might become a problem down the line. I think Maggie might be playing with more fire by continuing to see him.

Look for me in your rear-view mirror. I’ll see you all in the next Road to Review.
