OK, SO BOOM!

Jessie has dropped a bomb on Maggie that Claude’s been in the company of Daisy Compton, a 32-year-old mom of 4. Word on the street is she’s a juke joint jezebel known to have a temper that can get physical. Maggie doesn’t even allow the news to settle before heading home to stew and prepare herself to tell Hubert. When she tells him, he brushes it off because Claude is 21 years old, and his being with someone isn’t new. He’s an established lady’s man, and he’s grown. The news is a non-factor and of little concern to Hubert. He’s worried about his secret life being uncovered, not Claude being entangled in an unfavorable relationship.

Against Hubert’s advice, Maggie confronts Claude about his relationship with Daisy and is surprisingly met with backlash and backtalk like she’s never experienced before. She tries to warn him about how Daisy’s rumored to treat her previous suitors, but Claude brushes her off.
Apparently, the relationship between Claude and Daisy has escalated beyond where they thought it was. Claude returns home and announces that he’s moving in with Daisy. Unsurprisingly, Maggie’s reaction to this is immediate and overwhelming sadness, as Claude is her world, and she’s essentially lost him to Daisy.

The change in her demeanor is noticeable, and eventually, Maggie opens up to Mrs. Dowler about her family situation. Mrs. Dowler is empathetic and has a story of her own. She advises Maggie to let Claude be and leave him alone to experience whatever he’s gotten himself into with Daisy. This suggestion is offered up no sooner than Mrs. Dowler reveals how she rid her family and son of his parasitic wife.

I wonder which part of their conversation stuck with Maggie. What do you think?
