On My Nightstand

Let’s be real and honest. There’s no way I’m capable of writing a Last, Now, Next post without it looking chaotic (to me). I’d rather share the Now and not worry about the Last or Next (lol). Follow me on The Storygraph or Goodreads for those details. 😉

On my nightstand is too many books. My June 2023 is already extremely muddled. I am in a rush to move, preparing for my first cruise, and have several deadlines to meet at work before I leave at the end of the month. Most of the books on my nightstand have found their way there because I’m continuously seeking community in the book world. Unfortunately, I have not had much luck in getting people to join me in reading, so I’ve sought out other group reading opportunities. Hence, I’m committing myself to reading more than I usually do. Wish me luck.

Considering that most of these books were chosen because of a ‘group reading’ or ‘readathon’, I’ll group them accordingly.

The Revenge List by Hannah Mary McKinnon

This is the only outlier when it comes to this post. This book is not being read for any group reads or readathons. I thoroughly enjoyed The Neighbors, so I had to pick this up and inhale it too. I love messy characters and I know Hannah Mary McKinnon will deliver that in her stories.

Buddy Reads with Reading Beyond the Book Cover

Love, Honor, Betray is on my nightstand because I flew through Empty Vows. It amuses me that I committed one of my group reading pet peeves. I got caught up in the story and read ahead of the group (shaking my head).

Pachinko June Read Along

The Pachinko June Read Along is hosted by @browngirlreading, but I also have a Fable book club/buddy read running for the entire month for anyone interested in joining me. The purpose of the Silent Book Club is to discuss the book before the Mid-Month and Final Discussions on 06/17/2023 and 07/01/2023, respectively.

I have started Pachinko and am really enjoying the writing. It has an atmospheric storytelling feel to it.

Queer Lit Readathon

June 2023 is round 11 of the Queer Lit Readathon, a bi-annual readathon to read the rainbow aka read queer. There is a bingo board with prompts or challenges for those who want to take a stab at it and I will be participating by reading one of the group reads. I’ve already read one of the two, All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson. Therefore, I will be reading Finna by Nino Cipri in addition to another book on my nightstand, Burn Down, Rise Up by Vincent Tirado. Vincent is a non-binary, Afro-Latine author and there is a queer relationship at the forefront of Burn Down, Rise Up.

🙂 Read queer year-round, not just in June.

Horror Heaux Support Group

I recently started following the Horror Heaux Support Group on Instagram and their June Group Read is Burn Down, Rise Up by Vincent Tirado. I’m absolutely enjoying it and I just might finish it today. Preferably before the sun fully sets. I’m at the part where it’s getting spooky.

Murder, She Wrote Readathon

There’s a bingo board created for this readathon and although I’m not going to attempt it, I will be shaking up my reading by attempting a few prompts. Not to get a bingo, but to try something different. I plan to watch some episodes of the show and read one of the books. I’ve chosen to listen to the audiobook of book 24 in the series, Murder & Margaritas by Jessica Fletcher.

Read Caribbean Month and CaribAThon

June is Read Caribbean month and I am participating in CaribAThon and Read Caribbean. I will be reading the group picks and a book of my own choosing. The main goal is to read Caribbean in June. Not too hard :-).

I’m a broken record at this point, but do better and read Caribbean year-round. Diversify your reading. 😉
