10 Thoughts I Had While Reading – The Neighbors by Hannah Mary McKinnon

Hannah Mary McKinnon’s The Neighbors was quite a surprise. As usual, I didn’t know what to expect, but I had a grand old time with this domestic fiction, suspense novel. Ultimately, I want to do a pseudo-book review, formatted as a spoiler-filled discussion video for this book.

Until then, to give you all an idea of how I felt about this book, here are 10 Thoughts I Had While Reading The Neighbors by Hannah Mary McKinnon.

  1. Abby’s interactions with the people closest to her are rarely authentic unless you count continuous lying to herself and others as authentic *shrug*
  2. Nate can’t see the forest for the trees. It’s annoying how much he loves Abby enough for the BOTH of them, and she knows it.
  3. Neither of the female characters respects the privacy of their children. They want their children to be open with them. How can they desire something that requires respect between individuals?
  4. Nancy, of all things, why is that in the sink? (lol)
  5. I’m not sure if I want to label Liam as a piece of “you know what” yet. Something about him makes me think he is. Let’s see if I’m right.
    • Teehee I was very right!
  6. We get it, Francis is a big man. We don’t need to be reminded of his size.
  7. What is it about the women in this family and their need to keep life-altering secrets?
  8. Yes!!! Nancy!! Tack them to the wall.
  9. Hmm, no wonder we didn’t get the perspective of some of these characters.
  10. Do I feel bad? It’s complicated, but I’m landing on a semi-hard ‘No’.

If a taste of my thoughts got you curious, go ahead and pick this book up. You won’t regret it ;-).

Description

Abby looks forward to meeting the family who just moved in across the street–until she realizes they’re the one couple who could expose her deepest secrets

After a night of fun back in 1992, Abby is responsible for a car crash that kills her beloved brother. It’s a mistake she can never forgive, so she pushes away Liam, the man she loves most, knowing that he would eventually hate her for what she’s done, the same way she hates herself.

Twenty years later, Abby’s husband, Nate, is also living with a deep sense of guilt. He was the driver who first came upon the scene of Abby’s accident, the man who pulled her to safety before the car erupted in flames–the man who could not save her brother in time. It’s this guilt, this regret, that binds them together. They understand each other. Or so Nate believes.

In a strange twist of fate, Liam moves into the neighborhood with his own family, releasing a flood of memories that Abby has been trying to keep buried all these years. Abby and Liam, in a complicit agreement, pretend never to have met, yet cannot resist the pull of the past–nor the repercussions of the terrible secrets they’ve both been carrying…
